8 Kitchen Habits To Help Save The Planet

Dedicating this post to all women who spend a lot of time in the kitchen. Happy Women’s Month, ladies!

1. Wash Dishes In One Bulk
That’s right. Save soap and water by washing all your dishes in one go. At the end of each meal or after cooking.

dishes

2. Spray Soap Dish
Get a spray bottle and fill it up with diluted dish washing soap. After collecting all the dishes, place them inside the sink and spray with soap keeping all the dishes wet and ready for some squeaky cleaning. After cleaning with a sponge, rinse water and dry dishes.

3. Use Washable Cloth To Wipe Plates
Stop using kitchen tissue for drying hands or dishes. The only time I actually use kitchen tissue is when I need to drain oil from fried food.

dish towel

4. Minimize Pots When Cooking
If you can cook an entire meal just by using one pot, then good for you. Here’s a pasta dish cooked in one pot. (See images)

pasta2

-a. Stir fry mushroom, garlic and onions, add spices, sugar, and salt to taste, then water. Let water boil and add pasta
-b. Let pasta cook stirring occasionally
-c. Once pasta is cooked, add desired sauce (I used canned mushroom soup but you can use tomato sauce too)
-d. Mix and cook until desired thickness of sauce is achieved. Let it cool and serve!

5. Cook Lunch and Dinner In One Go
If you can cook lunch and dinner in one go, do it. This saves you time, energy, water, and dishes. At night, just reheat when you want to eat.

pots

6. Segregate Trash
Recycle bottles, segregate biodegradable from non-biodegradable. We should all know this by now.

bottles

7. Slice Your Own Cheese
Stop buying pre-sliced cheese that come with plastic films. Get yourself your own cheese slicer and slice them to your desired thickness.

8. Make Your Own Organic Insect Killer
Ants and roaches away with this home made insect killer. Ants hate cucumber and roaches hate pepper. Make your own non-toxic insect killer using ingredients from your own kitchen. (See image caption for recipe)

In one container, throw in sliced cucumber, lemon peelings, and whole pepper. Fill container with water. Let it sit for a week, then transfer some to a spray bottle and start using. Refill when necessary.

Brown Rice Coffee Experiment

Being part of Dakila’s Brown Rice campaign made me wonder how else to partake brown rice/ unpolished rice. I remember as a teenager we used to make homemade rice coffee in school, but we made it out of white rice. Yesterday I finally tried it with brown rice and it tasted even better.

Pusakalye Race Experience

Pusakalye Race 7

Pusakalye Race is the first alley cat race in Manila. With the members of Manila Fixed Gear growing, Rodel Guinto and friends decided to organize this race to further strengthen the bond between members. With the help of local bike shops and subculture stores, the first race was held April 22, 2012, with over 50 participants. (From Pusakalye Page)

Yesterday was my first Pusakalye experience to show my support to my sister, Devaki and brother-in-law, Rodel Guinto, the power couple behind the race. If I were going to describe it, it’s definitely one big Testosterone Festival! You have to witness it to understand it.

I’m definitely going back!

My Fresh Lumpia Addiction

Fresh Lumpia

Almost every Sunday morning, I ride to The Legaspi Sunday Market just to get a bite on my favorite fresh lumpia by Yan Ching. For only P60 you get a fat fresh lumpia filled with lettuce, sweet and salty ground nuts, mixed veggies with toge, fresh wansoy (cilantro), seaweed budbod, and garlic, served with their special sweet and salty brown sauce. The best part about it is that it’s vegetarian friendly!  At a nearby stall, I buy my freshly squeezed dalandan drink (p30) to partner with my fresh lumpia. Simply amazing!

Amazing Azalea

An unexpected beauty is how I would describe Azalea. A cafe/resto that sits on top of a mountain where you can view nature’s priceless elements: the sea, a stream below, and the vast mountains of Sibulan.

Riding our bikes from Dumaguete to Sibulan, about 19km.

I highly recommend to ride the habal habal when going up to Azalea. Cycling up there is strictly for hardcore bikers only.

Off the beaten path, 19 kms north of Dumaguete, in San Jose, is Azalea – a restaurant perched 289 meters above sea level on a mountain slope overlooking a spectacular ravine. Just 8 kilometers further up the mountain is the popular tourist destination, the Twin Lakes of Balinsasayao – 2 rain-filled craters 918 meters above sea level. Azalea is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life in Dumaguete without straying too far.

This is the exact same route to take going to Lake Balinsasayao. Take the highway from Dumaguete going north, passing through the Municipality of Sibulan. After around 14 kms, you’ll see the big sign on the left side of the highway saying “Twin Lakes (Balinsasayao and Danao)”. Take a left on this junction. You’ll start gaining altitude. You should see Azalea on your left about 5.2 kms from the junction. 8 kms further up the mountain takes you to Lake Balinsasayao.

Cleansing Exprience

Been on a raw food and home juiced fruits and veggies diet for the past 5 days. Loving it and going strong!

Juice Recipe:
5 carrots
2 cucumbers
2 fuji apples
1 lemon

Juice them all except for the lemon. Put them in 4 bottles (12oz) and you’re good to go. That’s breakfast, lunch, mid-day snack, and dinner!
